The pressure to increase daily active users by 5% while mitigating serious mental health issues really highlites the core dilemma facing AI companies today. What strikes me is how quickly OpenAI had to pivot from an overly sycophantic model back to something safer, only to find users complained it felt colder. The fact that they weighted user preferences too heavily in training shows how easy it is to optimize for engagment at the expense of wellbeing. Giving users control over ChatGPT's personality seems like a reasonable middle ground, though it shifts responsibility onto individuals to choose what's healthiest for them. It's remarkable that all this happened in just three years since ChatGPT's launch.
